Avoid non-essential travel

Overview

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand.

There is a shortage of fuel,  and frequent power outages which impact transport and other government services.

Cuban aviation authorities have advised that jet fuel will not be available from the 10 February to 10 March, 2026, with a possibility that this will be extended. As a result flight availability is likely to be disrupted at short notice.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Cuba should be aware of are:

  • Crime – avoid wearing valuable items and be especially careful with luggage at airports.
  • Shortages of medicines and medical supplies are also affecting healthcare availability with some hospitals postponing routine medical treatment and providing only urgent care.
  • Weather and natural hazards – hurricane season runs from June to November. Landslides, flooding and earthquakes can also happen.
  • Civil unrest – demonstrations can happen. Authorities may block internet access without notice. Avoid all protests and gatherings.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Cuba are required by Cuban law to have a valid travel insurance policy, including medical coverage, in order to enter the country.
