Exercise increased caution

Overview

Protests have occurred in major cities across Italy. Some of these protests have turned violent. You could be injured during violent outbreaks.

Authorities may impose public safety measures, including partial and localised curfews, in some locations.

New Zealanders are advised to avoid all demonstrations, protests, rallies, and other areas with significant police activity. Monitor the media and follow any advice issued by local authorities. For further advice on what to do in the event of major protests or civil unrest see our guidance on SafeTravel.

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand. Italy has a higher threat of terrorism and you can expect to see increased security presence across the country.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Italy should be aware of are:

  • Crime - watch out for petty crime, such as theft, especially in urban centres, tourist areas, and on public transport.
  • Civil unrest - demonstrations and protests are common, and can disrupt travel plans.
  • Earthquakes and other seismic activity.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Italy should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.
